Dear Mr. Blair:
You are being quoted in the American news today as having made statements that suggest God is in favor of the war in Iraq. I do not pretend to know the mind of God, but my best guess is that she would like to be left out of the whole Iraq debate. The “opposition” may not look too kindly on the idea of pitting the Western deity against theirs. At home, you may get a bit of flack from those who are less than religious.
I am sure you have enough on your agenda without analyzing American citizens’ responses to Bush. He may have convinced you that he has the support of the majority of the American people. That would be a dubious claim. From what is reported about the latest polls, support for the war is falling by the day. Religion is another matter. Most Americans are religious and seem happy that the White House has all but given up concealing the rapid dissolution of the separation between Church and State. The religious faction of our country, however, prioritizes the policing of private acts such as same-sex unions and abortions. Protection of conservative beliefs trumps the health of the planet, our soldiers, and society.
Our country is going in the wrong direction. Please do not be bullied into taking England on the same ride.
Truly,
Liz Mann
