Dear Mr. Ross,
I just heard the terrible news that after fifty years your bookstore on Telegraph is closing. I have heard that celebrity deaths come in threes. In this case, we have seen the demise of three businesses that have been local institutions. Mother’s Cookies has left Oakland after ninety-two years, and as I drove past Hooper’s Chocolates yesterday, along the Oakland section of your own Telegraph Ave., the marquee read “store closed!”. While these other businesses specialized in sweet treats, you have fed the minds of those in the campus area for decades.
Having worked in a bookstore, and frequented quite a few as well, I must tell you I always had a pleasant experience when visiting Cody’s. The staff at the information desk seemed to really want to help me find what I needed. Maybe that’s a small thing, but I find it rare these days.
In hopes that there may still be a chance to save Cody’s on Telegraph, I would like to suggest a possible solution to the business problems that have led to this unfortunate conclusion. You can change your address! Not long ago one of our local television stations, KRON, consulted an astro-numerologist help improve their business situation. He suggested a “fix” that involved changing their address, and apparently it has worked! If it is too late for the flagship location, keep it in mind for the future. I do hope you won’t need a fix, though.
See you on Fourth Street!
Your Humble Servant,
Liz Mann
