Dear Ms. Fonda,
Congratulations on your new career as a L’Oreal spokesmodel! Although you do look fabulous, I was surprised to see a major cosmetics line choose a woman of sixty-eight as a model. I vowed to avoid Lancome products many years ago after they dumped gorgeous Isabella Rossellini when they felt she’d gone over the hill. And while I admire L’Oreal for hiring you, I can not in good conscience purchase their products, as they reportedly still test on animals. I also find it displeasing that they recently purchased The Body Shop, thus sullying the latter company’s reputation for ethical production practices.
I wrote you a letter about a quarter of a century ago when you came to visit my elementary school. I probably still have it somewhere. I did not get a chance to give it to you because we were, of course, filed into and out of the auditorium for the assembly, and you had not signed up to shake a couple hundred grubby little hands. Let me take this opportunity to convey what was most likely the gist of that letter: “Thanks for visiting our school!”
I read that you do not feel you are the right person to speak out against the Iraq war, as you have “too much baggage” from Vietnam. I hope you will reconsider this position. Each day the situation gets worse, and we need as many voices as possible to decry the atrocities of war. In the interest of alleviating unnecessary suffering, I hope you will also lean on L’Oreal to become cruelty-free and environmentally friendly.
Truly,
Liz Mann
